Bilkent University was founded on October 20, 1984, as the first private, non-profit university in Turkey, established by Professor Ihsan Sıtkı Durmuş in the heart of the capital, Ankara. Its primary goal was to create a center of excellence in higher education and research.
The name Bilkent holds meaning; "Bilkent" is an abbreviation for "bilim kenti," which means "city of science and learning" in Turkish.
